Is Is Ok To Work On Ficus?

Just bought a ficus benjamina (sp?) with about 10 separate trucks sticking out of the roots in a clump. Is it ok to separate these now (will require some root work) or should I wait? Till when? (i.e. ficus dormant in winter?) I'm in zone 9, southern California.

TIA.

Ficus are tropicals, meaning they never naturally drop their leaves.

Therefore, I think it's safe to work on them whenever.

Tia,
Great time right now. Pull apart gently and try and get some solid roots with each little tree. Pot up, keep warm and moist. Instant grove , right.

The leaves of a broadleaf evergreen don't live forever, so there will be periods when they are shed and new ones are regrown. If a ficus gets stressed out due to a change in watering or illumination, it will sometimes drop all its leaves and pout for a week or two.

Regards,

Matt

Ficus seem to do best with mid summer root work. They are growing fast at this time of year so the recovery time is short. Do keep them in a shady spot until you see signs of new growth though.

I want to get my benjamina to start branching more to give it a canopy rather than letting it grow straight up. Will it do this naturally or do I have to cut the branches in order to get them make branch?

You will almost certainly need to influence the natural branching by trimming back and pinching growing tips.

Matt

I also bought a f. benjamina that sounds very similar to yours. I didn't dare (actually I just didn't have the supplies) to pull it apart and find out how many separate trees it actually was. I instead took a different route (See thread "Jerry Rigged f. benjamina" in Beginners Q/A). I'm interested to hear how yours turns out. Keep me posted

Creating canopy structure seems fairly easy, I pruned and defoliated mine about a week and a half ago, and it's already sprouting new leaves and branches. One thing I noticed though, new branches seem to come from the bases of previously existing leaves, not from the cut site. So when trimming, don't leave a long stem w/ out leaves behind the cut, as it will just become a dead twigg, and the branches will grow from the nearest leaf base anyway.

Good Luck!
