Metal Hallide Question

Hi all,

I aquired a metal hallide light, because I brought my plants in for the winter.

We are expecting temps here in Alaska to hit maybe
-10 to -30 degrees below zero and I didn't want to risk any damage to my plants.

I have a drop ceiling and this light fixture is probably 30 to 40 lbs.

For now I have it on a table stand shining a little above table level.

Does anyone have an idea if the a light that heavy will cause damage to a drop ceiling?

If I leave it how it is right now, how often should I turn my plants?

Is there a site with that info?

Thanks,
H

Harold,

In my experience with drop ceilings I would have to say it would depend on how it is attached. In most cases you will find a thick metal coat hanger type wire attaching the ceiling rails to the joists. If you added additional hangers close to where the light would be hung and the ceiling grid is aluminum it should support the weight. You would however not be able to attach the fixture to the ceiling tile itself. I would suggest though for safety sake that you attach the fixture with chains directly to the joists above the ceiling. Small holes in the ceiling tile are hardly noticeable. It would be a shame to have the light come crashing down onto your trees.

Harold, alas, not all drop ceilings are created equally. It depends on the type of grid used, the degree of expertise of the installer, and as mentioned above the amount- placement- and type of wire used to hang the ceiling.

Good Luck
Jay

Thanks for the link, and the info. I had the same feeling about that drop ceiling, so I imagine that I will be going to the original ceiling joists.

I appreciate the quick response.

Thanks Jay and Adam!

Aloha,
H
