Juniper Indoor
Well i know after reading alot that junipers live better outdoors becuase they are outdoor plants. But i was wondering would keeping them outdoors a couple days then bringing them indoors a couple days be ok with the plant.

If it's done only occasionally--like once every five months or so--that's fine.
Plants do not like to be moved around. They don't have roots for nothing. Moving inside and outside every few days for a couple of weeks or longer, will weaken and/or kill the plant eventually, as it will be constantly trying to adjust itself to each location--and have no success. |

I can personally attest to this following my own experience in what I call the Great Juniper Massacre of 05. Such a tragedy.

People keep trying to bring junipers indoors. Even with a split schedule like you are suggesting, the tree will probably die a very slow, gradual death, so slowly that you won't even know it is dying until it is dead as a doornail. Junipers stay green until after they are dead many times. It isn't the beautiful vibrant green but green enough to fool you. Please, if you love your juniper, put it outside and leave it there....in the sun.
If you plan to entertain and would like to use it for decoration for one night, fine. But then, back outside. Even the trees that are supposed to be ok for indoor bonsai, don't really like it and are harder to keep happy than if they were outdoors. It wasn't meant to be. |

hiya
my first bonsai tree is a juniper... mind you its only been about 2 - 3 weeks since i got into the bonsai hobby. you will soon get over the "bring inside" phase. the minute i bought it, i knew i was destined to take it inside. due to it being nice...and where i live, its like the ghettos and the slums....theres no telling whether someone will pinch it or not. but now, i wont even bring it inside to even entertain guests. junipers need the outside environment, the humidity, sun...natrual rain & thunderstorms etc. now that i have different bonsai trees to add to my collection...even if i wanted to bring the juniper in...theres no way i can bring all 3 of them in. and bonsai as someone mentioned before, u cant just seem to be satisfied with just one. yeah dont bring it inside at all... how i see it is...even if its one day a month...it wont die ...but why make it suffer..and even if it is one day...theres no point on doing something unhealthy for the tree. good luck |

To the beginners who likely are unknowledgeable in regar to indoor or not.
Most bonsai shows are indoors, and generally run 3-4 days. So, it is OK to bring a bonsai indoors. Right? Right. However, the bonsai MUST BE VERY HEALTHY. The bonsai must be indoors for as short a period of time as possible. And even the healthiest should be given 3-4-5 months between indoor visits. Pat

"you will soon get over the "bring inside" phase."
As noted, this phase passes. It passes more quickly if the trees you're moving inside are large and weigh 25 lbs or more. Having more than one tree also helps take the spotlight off of a single "masterpiece" tree. "make it healthy and then bring it in like......say one day a month.....then one day a week...." No. One day or two days every FEW months (and that's pushing things) is probably the limit. You cannot "acclimate" the tree with more frequent trips indoors. It cannot adapt to such treatment. It is not an animal. It is a plant. Plants like to have their environment REMAIN CONSTANT ALL THE TIME. They cannot move and constant reacclimization stresses them out--especially the drastic differences between indoors and outdoors. |
