Grow Lights

Well winter is fast approaching, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where I could get a some grow lights at a decent price. I just moved from Fl to Sc and I have some tropicals, that I don't want to loose this winter. I don't really have a window that will get enough light and as I live in an apartment, I don't have room for a greenhouse.
Thanks,
Richard

edit: sorry I put it in the wrong forum

In my experience, I use regular Fluorescents bulbs. Bringing the bulbs down as close as possible will help. You can probably buy them at a Home Depot or Lowes. A regular shop light is fairly inexpensive way to go.
I would suggest that you invest in a timer and set it for about 16 to 18 hours....

Try this URL for a little more information

Best of luck,

I use a 400W metal halide. It's amazing for tropicals.

I use fluorescent lights as well. I got a 4' light fixture. I use one Cold bulb (6500k) and one Warm bulb (2700k) just like the site steez shows. One of each gets you the full spectrum, which is what plants like. If you go with fluorescents and put one warm and one cold bulb, you'll have to change the balasts in a stock fixture. Most stock balasts are for 2 T12 bulbs. The warm bulb will be a T8. So you have to have one balast for a T12 and one for a T8 bulb (the stock balast won't work b/c it's a continuous circuit). Here are some links about indoor lighting:

*steez - Those are some killer lights!

If you are looking for inexpensive grow lights, check THESE OUT Also while at that site Charley's Greenhouse has tons of lighting options. I have purchased many items from them and am truly happy with both the products and service I receive from them. I have built my entire indoor growing setup from them, and this year I had to double my setup. I will be posting some pictures and links in a couple of days.

Hope this helps

Adam:
You are 100% correct on the service from Charleys. For the indoor supplies, they are terrific. When my old Humidifier wasn't doing the trick I bought one from them, and my humidity was upped quite a bit....

My Bougainvilleas loved it so much they bloomed all winter...

I guess many of us are starting to prepare for the cold weather. I'm turning my dining room area into a home bonsai workshop area (yes, I'm single so I can get away with that! hehe) and have been looking at lighting and indoor shelving and such. Found a GREAT shelving unit at Home Depot, adjustable inch by inch and is a wire shelf unit that holds up to 350lbs per shelf, cost was $52 including tax, and it's not a bad looking unit. I'm planning to hang light fixtures under each shelf.

Thanks for all the links on lighting, gives me some reading to do before I buy my new fixtures. I'm still considering just going with an Icecap VHO ballast from my aquarium setup, and wiring in the bulbs myself, but your links give me other options.

Dear W3rdSmyth :
Two other things to consider with your setup, beside a timer.

1: an Oscillating fan, which will keep the pest population down,

2: a humidifier to keep all those trees happy in a wetter environment...*

* the higher humidity is hell on furniture.
