"greenhouse" Helpful Or Useless?
Hi,
I have to think of a way to get more space on my balcony as it is getting rather cluttered with bonsai, container plants, roses... and I am starting to wonder where I will manage to squeeze in should I want to sit on the balcony once I have all my indoor plants outside this summer... Last year I have seen that at Ikea they have shelf, that is covered with glass, has glass doors and a vent at the top. The glass panes are only loosely fitted so there is about 1cm of free space between the doors and the frame where air could circulate (if I remember correctly). My balcony is facing east and I would put it in the most shady part of the balcony (got another balcony just on top. But it will get some sun at times. So far I have always overwintered my hardy trees just by wrapping them up in fleece and bubble wrap. I was thinking that may be if I had this greenhouse I could put my olive tree and pomegranate out too (well wrapped up too obviously). What I am concerned about is whether a "glasshouse-shelf" like that will actually help or do more harm. Though there are openings will I just get more extreme temperature changes that risk damaging all trees even my hardy trees or can I truely hope that I can keep some trees that I have kept indoors so far outside now? I have kept my laurel tree outdoors for three winters and when I wrap it up well it is doing fine (it is a container plant though)... Well, I would be grateful for any thoughts and suggestions. Has anyone used a glass house like that for overwintering Regards, Ravenna |

Hmmmm
I used one of these for some time. (http://www.charleysgreenhouse.com/c...&ProductId=1554 ) I liked it teh greenhouse and used it well, but the one you show, I dunno, looks kinda flimsy. Perhaps you should look for a company that sells hobyy greenhouse kits or the like.

Brian,
How do you heat it - or is it just for winter protection?

Hi Thaddeusjd,
I realize that things by Ikea are not made for eternity. The problem I have is that I want my balcony to continue looking attractive and the greenhouses that I have seen so far all seem to be basically made out of plastic. That would be fine for winter but in summer I would like to actually see my plants and have something that doesn't look too shed like. The Ikea version isn't perfect but so far it was the best that I had seen. But I will have another look around to see whether I find something else... The greenhouses that I had seen by firms specialized on that were all way to large. I don't want to use half my balcony on a greenhouse! Were you able to keep more tender plants in your greenhouse than you could without it or does that not really make a difference in that respect in the end? Because if it doesn't I could just get some kind of shelf where I put the pots and wrap them up as I always do... |

Hi Ravenna,
I am not quite sure what the purpose of your greenhouse is. If you just need more shelving space, to give you room, you can get stands that will let you do that - usually called baker's carts or plant stands. Units like the one you posted can be great for propagation of cuttings and seeds and raising the humidity. You'd need to be careful about having something that small exposed to full sun, or it could get too hot inside. I think you could always open the top or remove a panel, though. If it's intended for overwintering trees - that's a different story and it would all depend on your climate and what you're doing already. I can't tell if it is double-wall construction. If not, it would not provide a great amount of insulation and would require more heating, but it would cut the wind chill that plants are exposed to outdoors. Locating it against the wall of your house in winter would help as it would absorb heat from the house and radiate less into the air. You can put a small space heater inside. Sometimes a 100 watt bulb will be enough - again it depends on your climate and it will require experimentation and some feedback in terms of a min-max thermometer of some kind. Hope this helps. If not maybe you could be a little more specific about the questions/ needs. Regards, Matt
