Question Experience with Greenhouses ??

My wife and I just recently purchased our first home, and we are in the process of building a greenhouse in the corner of our backyard. Does anybody have any experience in this area?? At this point in time, I am unsure as to the size we are going to build it. I currently have approximately 20 trees, but obviously will train more when I have the appropriate accomadations. Also, are there any home depot, or other style books/magazines that specilize in this area of building?? Any help would be great...

Charleys greenhouse sells many books on the desighn and building of green houses. They also sell DIY kits, and all the materials and accessories you'll need.

I have one, but a lot depends on what you are going to do with it, and whether you anticipate using it to lengthen the growing season a bit or do something like grow tropicals in it year round.

There is a lot of good info, including books over at forum sponsor, ***CHARLEY***

I put one up this spring called Hoop House (www. hoophouse.com). It comes in a kit and you construct the ends from plywood and 2x4's purchased locally.

In the summer I have it covered with 50% shade cloth to protect the trees from the scorching sun and high winds (southern Kansas). In the winter it will be covered with plastic to protect from the cold winds and sub zero temperatures. It may help extend the growing season somewhat but it is mainly for protection from weather extremes.

I suppose it could be adapted for year around growing conditions. Use the above URL and ask them for customers who use it this way. The Hoop House is very reasonably priced and works well for me.

You may have done this already, but if you start doing an internet search you will find a ton--actually several tons--of info on every kind, every purpose, and every price range.

I built mine from plans and supplies at www.sundancesupply.com. Very plain but very economical for a greenhouse that is as good as the big buck ones. It started life as an orchid and tropical plant greenhouse but was too expensive to heat for hobby purposes, so now is a bonsai and cacti greenhouse.

I've looked at all of them and went with a new option, a greenhouse tubing bender I founf on ebay. It is made exculsivey for bending hoop, for greenhouses, We bent our 10 foot wide hoops using metal fence tubing in about three minutes each. the instructions say it can be bent in under a minute, but I've always been slower. pPlans came with tool, completed our 10x20 for about $350.00, These people are great, they even been on Michael Holligans TV show. All I can say it works great. They have a web site but go to ebay to look they are cheaper there.

greenhouse

I have built many greenhouses over the years and one of the best books I have found to help a beginner is ORTHO'S all about greenhouses.
This book contains plans, designs, suppliers as well as lots of information on interior layout and basic greenhouse sestems and operation .It is a very helpful book for anyone who wants to build a greenhouse.
GOOD LUCK and Have Fun!!!
