Question Ficus has fruit!!!

Hello everyone,

Has anyone ever seen a bonsai ficus produces fruit?

I am asking because it looks like my ficus has fruit. Ok, you are maybe thinking that I am mistaken new buds for fruit! This is not the case at all, because new ficus bubs(Microcarpa) are rarely grow two buds from the same leave. And new ficus buds have pointy tips not round!.

I see many pairs of these round looking fruit-like. They are about 1/16in. Right now, they are so small, and I don't have a macro lens to take a photo to show you. I am going to find some way to take some photo to show you later.

Thanks for reading

Fig Wasp

2xDavid

I've seen several types of Ficus/figs over the years (ok decades) and they all will "flower" at sometime or another. It seams like the thicker leaves throw "figs" more often. Mine have "figs" now in the middle of winter (sorry had to throw that in zone 9 you know). Several years ago I remember that they would never ripen. I recall someone ( Taiwanese or Chinese ) at an IBC/BCI convention telling me that they needed a certain type of wasp to pollinate it as he was chuckling about it, We both got a laugh outta it when he said that years ago, when we started importing these, we forgot to import the wasp too! LOL …after a short search here’s a link for more detailed info.

Good luck, redhawk (David2)

I have never seen fruit on a good bonsai trees, other than in photographs. I've seen several pictures in books and on the internet.
I said "on good bonsai trees", because for years I grew a fig tree for fruit in a 15 gallon pot.
I wasn't pruning it as a bonsai, but it died back to the roots a couple of times over the winter, and dieback partway a couple of other times. It started me thinking about bonsai again after more than 15 years without bonsai, so that was good.
But I finally gave it to a neighbor who had a heated greenhouse. My unheated greenhouse just wasn't to it's liking. Hence the dieback.
Alas, no pictures. I can't even remember much what it looked like.
I have moved away from the neighbor I gave it to, but I think I'll ask him for a cutting. That is how I got it in the first place, a pencil-sized cutting mailed to me.

Yes. They fruit regularly when in good conditions. They will also fruit when subjected to stress.

I have a ficus davyii cutting in a glass of water that is producing fruit. Once it had produced enough roots it started fruiting. I'm scared to pot for feat it will go south on me..... That sounded dirty but I promise I didn't mean it that way.

I have seen several Ficus bonsai with fruits, but there always were Ficus carica.

Here, in the mediterranean Ficus, as trees, aren't considered as greenhouse-needed but, as bonsai, they don't survive our winter temperatures (inland Barcelona, sometimes several minus ºC). It would be nice to know what finally were the buds on your fig... if they were fruits, as said, that would be my first time!
