Actually, the two compositions that I posted were initially designed by Nick Lenz. At this point, he would probably wince if credit were given to him, since they have been out of his care for several years - and they probably don't fit his standards of refinement and style - though I am learning and I think that their development is now improving with my understanding of the species.

Back to the thread related to Cotoneaster microphyllus: I appreciate the relatively fast development (ramification). I have not experienced any pests - though I do not grow inside as Paul has. It does not tolerate drought well.

Though it does not develop into a big powerful "Wow" specimen, it is wonderful to play with and learn bonsai techniques with this species. I consider this a good beginner bonsai species.

If I remember correctly, cotoneaster like it a little on the dry side so if it is taking a week to dry out, you may want to be careful of the watering.

These are pretty tough plants but you will need to keep a watch for powdery mildew when it gets humid in August. Also, I believe these are related to Malus and therefore susceptible to fire blight (fatal).

Thanks all. Im considering planting one of the two in the garden to fatten it up for a few years, and to continue bringing his brother in for the winter. Hopefully I'll have some images to share after the coming year.

Here's a link to my only cotoneaster (it's semi-deciduous where I live), and another to some info at Evergreen.
