Cascade's first wiring
I defoliated most of the tree leaving some leaves on the ends of each branch just to make sure there is good sap flowing and the tree is still making the most of the sunlight. Then I wired it. This is my first cascade. I have had the tree for about 6 months or so and wanted to let it get settled into its new home and thought this weekend would be an okay weekend to do it.
I am not sure of the age of the tree. I believe it is about 12 years old. That is what the guys at the nursery told me. The cascade is 20 inches long, the diameter of the canopy (before defoliation) is 14 inches, the height from the soil is 12 inches, and the trunk is about 2 inches wide. Thoughts? Comments? Here are a couple of pictures of the tree when I first got it back in January. It was in a stock pot and I potted it into the cascade pot. About a month and a half ago I took a large cutting from the top and it rooted. That has been potted up and is doing nicely.
Other than that I hadn't done any major pruning to the branching until the other night when I wired it. Thanks, Jeff |

It's nice to work on a tree that has some growth to it, isn't it? If it were mine, I'd put more movement into the cascade and probably make it into a semicascade. Have fun with it!

I was thinking about putting some more umph in the cascade. I need to get some heavier wire though. the trunk is pretty strong and hard to bend on my own with the smaller wire I have on it now. Also, I am a little scared to do it myself. I might bring it to a workshop and wire it then.
The pictures don't do it justice. I don't have the best camera right now. It looks much nicer in person. I think I might wait to do any more training on this tree until next year. I will let it feel out its new style for a while. Thanks for the suggestions. A semi-cascade isn't out of the question. Maybe as a final product... We'll see. Thanks, Jeff |
