Hi Zejer, This plant should do very well with root pruning and air-layering. Just don't do both at the same time or in the same year even. If your tree is healthy and not root bound, then you could do the air-layer first. On the other hand, if it is weak and has poor soil and root condition, then you have to transplant first. This is what is usually needed for "old" nursery plants that had been in the same container for a long time. Just use a very loose, airy soil mix with mostly inorganics such as pumice or lava rooks or turface or similar things and it should do fine. I just bare rooted and defoliated a few in the middle of July, threw them in 100% pumice, and they just popped right back up in a few weeks.
