I don't know if this is possible, but could anyone mail me a cutting, or even a few, of a Trident Maple? Thanks to any help.

Boniface,
This thread would have been better suited to the propagation forum. However, I think if you offered a trade for anything you may have, or possibley a purchase, it may entice people a little more. I personally don't have tridents. They don't grow here, unfortuneately. |

I guess I'll put this on that forum. But trade? I don't, I have a boxwood, juniper, Azeala, and an Oak. Nothing special. Besides, it's not hard to make/ship a cutting.

cuttings
Boniface,
I think that I may be able to help you, but first i have a couple of questions. I just came across my first Trident Maple in the wild -- right down the block. They aren't that common here in Chicago, most streets are lined with Field Maples and Maples with burgandy-colored leaves. The reason I question if it was a Trident Maple is that the seeds (attached below) do not resemble a Maple seed at all. I was going out tomorrow morning for cuttings myself, if I can get to them (all of the branches are out of reach and the adventitious buds coming from the trunk are too short for cuttings.) So if possible, i'll snip some for you. The only problem would be disease -- is it a possibility that i'm doing something hazardous. We have Japanese Longhorn problems here, and a bad case of West Nile Virus. I'm probably just being a little overcautious, but I'd hate to send you something that would wipe out your collection Well, with that said, if you want me to send you a couple, just email me your address and I'll ziplock a couple for you. |

I'm glad you figured out what it was, Kazuki. I was afraid we had the West Nile Virus on bonsaiTALK...
![]() Trident maple have winged seeds. They look like insect big light brown wings with a bit of a blob attached where the insect would go. Regards, Matt

Thanks for clearing that up guys. As a kid we called maple seeds "helicopters" and I knew this seed didn't fit the bill. I can't even find Trident Maples in garden centers around here.

Try this, maybe:
Seems pretty durn cheap to me, and they'll mail it right to you: http://www.internationalbonsai.com/...seedmaples.html The only hitch is that you have to order by the middle of Feb (they still have last year's info up), and then wait till March or April to get your trees. There's a bunch of places selling seed, too... |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME
|
Salix, the site you list is for Bill Valavanis, INTERNATIONAL BONSAI
ARBORETUM. You order from him in the fall and get the plants shipped in the early spring. I have ordered from him for the past two years and was very happy. He does not update that part of his site until his new year, 2003, items are ready. As an aside, I wonder if with thie new (or newly inforced) importation laws, if there will be much coming into this country! Bill is an extremely nice fellow. You could email him and see what he has at this time.
