Free Seeds

Was just going through my mail and found an envelope from the National Forest Foundation. In it was two packages of Red Maple seeds. No letter, just the seeds so I don't know why they sent them to me.
I am getting a bit long in the tooth so growing things from seeds is not a thing I want to start doing. Not enough time left for that. I do plan on staying around for a long time but not watching seeds grow ;o) Watching girls yes, watching seeds grow no.
So if anyone wants a pack of them let me know and I'll send them to you. I just don't want them to wind up in the trash can. Could be one of those masterpieces in those packages of seeds. Who knows.

Ron;

I'd be interested in giving your orphan seeds a home but I'm not sure whether they'd get across the border. Ag Canada has this nasty habit of intercepting plants & seeds and destroying them if they aren't happy with them (all sorts of reasons given, banned species, no phyto-sanitary cert, etc....) so its a bit of a cr@p shoot whether I'd ever get them.

While I too am rather long in the tooth I still enjoy growing seedlings (when I'm not looking at the girls )as its always an interesting way to learn more and gives me so many more vicitims, oops, I mean subjects to work on. Besides, growing from seed is often the only way I can get some species out here in the horticultural wasteland of Alberta.

Ron,
Would you happen to know what zone they are hardy to?

Well,
I just took a look and the map shows them up through my area. I would be willing to take some off your hands to plant in my yard (for at least a few years)

As I recall, we had a plantation of red pine on my mother's Christmas tree farm in Vermont.

They were not being grown for Christmas trees, but instead for miner's pit props. Planted in the ground from USDA seedlings, they grew very rapidly.

Bart
How did we get all the way from red maple to red pine ;o)
Oh well all I need now is the addresses to mail the seeds to. Have sent a PM to Fletch and Adam requesting that.
