I imagine it will work if you know the clay and quality of the potter. But, like with trees, I find the three dimensions required, especially since I'm generally looking for display pots. I like to see them live with the tree unless I know the potter's work very well. The pot is like the frame on a picture and I don't buy frames on the web either because I'm going for composition. But ther are some very good potters who sell their work online. Sara Raynor, for one. And our own Dale (Joe Cocker) Cochoy!

I don't buy bonsai pots online often, but I have found dallasbonsai.com has some good pots.
And of course northwindpottery.com (thats Kevin/muddslinger's website) has great pots. But Kevin is running out of stock.

I live in a place where Bonsai is not as popular as in some areas, so buying items like pots are hard to do. unless I do it online.
Dallasbonsai.com ...has a large selection Tokoname.com ...they are located in Japan and takes anywhere from 6-12 weeks to get your pot, but quality is great. Stonelantern.com ...they are a little pricey and selection is not too big, but if you know what you want it's nice to start there. |

Buying pots as everyone knows is such a personal choice, but if you only do it once in your life, you should commission a pot to be made for one of your special trees.
My choice would be Dale Cochoy. He made a wonderful pot for my Bucida Spinosa and if you go to his web site you will see my tree as well as some fine pots.....

My two cents... I am a potter... OK a potter of limited experience but I do make SOME PRETTY GOOD POTS.
If you are looking for just any old pot to train your tree or to display it at a reasonable inexpensive price go to http://www.bonsaimonk.com/ The monks have some really good prices on Mica Pots and on mass produced pots from both Japan and China. If you are looking for something different, something that not everyone else has you should go to a potter. As Carl suggested, Dale does excellent work. Sara is my personal favorite and Kevin has shown us that he is a force to be heard from in the Bonsai Pot Arena. I hope to have some pots available on this site later this week, you will have to decide if they are worthy of your attention..... But I can assure you.... even guarantee that a professional potter is going to give you something different an unique and well worth the extra cost! I must also agree with David, the best case is to see the pot in person, even have your tree with you, then you can really determine the correct pot. The net (even catelogs) are wonderful, but a 2-D image isn't the same as first hand! Remember in most cases.... You Get What You Pay For! Jay

I'm gonna throw in another plug for Kevin Thompson's (mudslinger's) pots. His webpage http://www.northwindpottery.com/bonsai/ has some really wonderful pots, the one I bought (the yellow one, lowest left) is even more beautiful in person.
And he also takes great care in packing too. -Cody

Here's Sara's www.redwing.net/~daalms/
and Dale's www.wildthingsbonsai.com/ And, by the way, Jay's pots, for a novice, are incredible

I'll add my voice to those praising Kevin Thompson's work. I ordered six from him, and if I'd realized how good they would be, I would have ordered twelve. The quality of work is just astonishing. Jay's expression, "a force to be reckoned with" is right on the mark.
Best regards, Carl
