Los Angeles area bonsai stock dealers/nurseries
All,
The only places I currently frequent are House of Bonsai in Lakewood, CA and Mount Fuji Bonsai Nursery in Upland, CA. I'm not yet in the market for finished trees and like playing with stock material. Does anybody have recommendations for other places to go or people to contact? Thanx. -Moo. |

Al keppler has done some nice nursery tours in the Los Angeles & Central California area
Here you go for the first part, which I think is L.A region: http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthread.php?t=813 You can also search the forum on TOUR and see what comes up. Regards, Matt

Thanks Treebay, that was a really cool thread. Gotta pack up the wife and take a day or two and make the tour some time soon.

Make sure to go to Chikugo-En too. It's only twenty minutes or so from House of Bonsai, and it's a joy to see. I bought some really nice little mame/shohin Kingsville boxwoods, some super little pomegranate nanas, etc. He has nice little cuttings (although they may be pretty well gone this time of year, maybe spring would be better??) And his larger trees are a pleasure to look at.

Thanks Joanie, I'll have to look that one up. It's gonna take some planning to do a trip that will take more than just a few hours. We will have to get someone to look after the kennels for a day or two. That alone is usualy hard with two large breeds, Cane Corsos and Akitas.

Thanks, guys!
Thanks for digging up that old thread, Matt. I've copied all the addresses and may be heading out on a little expedition tomorrow. Dropped by the San Gabriel Nursery today. They've got some nice collected Juniperus californicus. Way out of my league, but nice to see in any case. Didn't have any Ficus stock, unfortunately. I may just end up taking cuttings from the Ficus microphylla nitida (or so the nurseries say) that are planted along streets all over So. Cal. Need to read up on how to do that properly first, of course....

I've visited San Gabriel Nursery, House of Bonsai, Marumiya, Chikugo-En, Kimura, and Yamaguchi Nursery. If you're looking for Ficus, then I'd suggest House of Bonsai...they had the largest Ficus selection out of the above mentioned, followed by Marumiya. If I remember correctly, I think Kimura and Chikugo-En might've had some as well, but the selection wasn't too great.

Moo, being in Rancho, you are just a hop skip and a jump from Kim's. This is by far the best nursery in Southern Cal. and probably the best in the USA.
Take the I-15 north to the junction of I-15 and I-395. Take a left on Phelan road, it is not marked too well so ask at the gas station there for the exact road junction. Travel west on Phelan road and look for the small sign on the south side of the road that says "Kim's Bonsai Nursery". It is a ways off the main road, about a quarter mile back to the south of Phelan road. You will not be dissapointed. Hope you make it there soon. Kim's Tour Regards, Al Keppler

Kim's Bonsai Nursery
Thanks, Al. Actually, I know that area fairly well. I've been trying to collect a rare and flashy beetle that hangs out on California junipers all summer long. I'll have to turn my next collecting trip into a bonsai trip as well. Heh heh. Oh, darn, right? I look forward to visiting Kim's.
