HarrisonTX , welcome. You are correct, Bonsai Tools are not inexspensive. If you were going to save up for one, it should be a concave cutter. Most of the other tools can be approximated with non-bonsai tools. You should check to see if there is a Bonsai Club near you. Going to the meetings will be extremely helpful in your Bonsai Education... and you might find someone there who can help you out with some used tools.

Good luck and stay in touch
Jay

Hi Kevin,

Yes, it does sounds just like an ad for a site you've never purchased from. How is their forum?

I have moved this portion of the thread to Vendor Feedback, where you are welcome to plug whomever you wish without fear of retribution.

Incidently, I have a drawer full of $16 novice shears and $30 concave cutters which I don't offer over the TreeBay Bonsai Tools & Supplies website, but you may see them on some sites. The quality is far inferior even the basic grade, and since folks are buying over the Internet and can't judge quality as easily, I don't sell them by Internet and make it really easy. Maybe you will see them on eBay one day, though.

Here are some questions to ask your prospective tool vendor:

1. Are the tools constructed from quality tool steel?
2. Are the tools tempered to provide a cutting edge that lasts?
3. Are the tools warranted? For how long? What if I don't like them or they break in normal use?
4. Are the cutting edges laminated to provide strength and toughness?
5. If the finish is silver, is it stainless, laminated stainless, nickel plate or chrome plate?
6. Where were the tools made? How long has the company been in business?

Basically speaking, in bonsai tools you will often find that you get what you pay for.

Regards,

Matt

Very good points, Matt.

I've bought cheap tools on the net, and am now resolved to quit the practice.
