Poots,
I actually wouldn't mind playing with that, IF HIGH FIRED.
But, I'm a glutton for abuse

I recall Will wanting something like this idea when I posted a large land/water pot.

Dale:
It's high-fired and it is yours!
I'll bring it to DC for you, or whatever else you want

This was my first attempt at this look, and my second came out far better.

What I did was mold the general shape, and then lay a veneer of different colored clays over it.

The veneer was made by taking strips and clumps of different colored clay and pressing them together, using a roller. Then I sliced the the rolled piece into strips about 4 inches wide, and stacked them like a layer cake. Then I used thin slices of the "cake" to make the veneer.

I was trying to model Western cliffs like in Colorado, with their striations. After the first attempt, I realized it would work much better if the "grain" was all parrallel.

I think my idea was certainly far more clever than my execution. Feel free to improve on it.

I wish I could find the second one. I may have lost it, but I just packed everything up to move. Here is a really bad picture taken in 2002.

Thanks poots,
I understand your assembly methods and agree...it was clever.
do you remember what temp/cone you fired it to.
I can "do some stuff to it and refire to execute some changes.
I then have some ideas about how to display it differently.

We'll see how it comes out. I saved the picture you posted.

Would you like to just drop it off at my bonsai friend's house in Columbus/Worthington border right at 270/315 . You would do well to meet him anyway.

Did that leave a big hole in it somewhere?

Nope, no hole. It came off the back, the front still looks as good -- or bad -- as before.
I'll post current, better pix later today.

I believe my qualification was realistic.

Although I am sure there are many who would claim this to be a valid expression of art and whom may very well be right, the image that is reflected onto my retinas sends a completely different signal altogether to my brain.

In short, no thanks, but I would almost pay the postage to have this sent to the Crow.

Now there's a thoughtful critique of someones multi faceted artistic composition !!
Hey Will, You COULD pay the postage to have it sent to me!

Lets wait and see how it looks after it's worked on a bit ( If it survives, I'm kinda dubious since a piece fell off! ) , replanted and displayed differently.
Did you glaze it with a clear glaze?

BTW, Pootsie, check out this page from the 25 finalists of the first NBF pot competition in 2001. Pretty similar idea. The second pot down on the right. This pot was auctioned off after the competitio and purchased by an IBC'er as I recall.

Dale

Well, dang y'all, it was my first and only pottery class ever!
Cut a bonsaiTALK member a break!

The execution was bad, but I still think I had a good idea.

Dale, here are pictures from five minutes ago. I did indeed use a clear glaze to bring out the contrast, but obviously too much of it. If there is such thing as a matt finish clear glaze, that would have been a better choice.

The break was on the back, where I had done a poor job of affixing the veneer.

Will is going to cover postage to you. (Thanks, Will!)

I was afraid of that pootsie. The clear glaze over it will make it real hard to do something different with the clay glazing to make it look more like real rock. Especially if it is going to want to run ( which it will I'm sure) . I'll have to think about it a while and revise my initial ideas of change. Do you by any chance remember the clay you used or firing cone?

"Will is going to cover postage to you. (Thanks, Will!)"

Ha! OK. Now I guess I'll have to pass it along somehow when done! Heck, maybe Matt's auction sit will be up by then and we can use it for income to Matt's website . IF it comes out without going into self destruct! Which I'm kinda expecting . I'll followup regardless.

Dale
