Re: good deals on saplings
Frenchman: What part of the world are you from. If you want elms all you have to do is root cuttings. Each spring you will have to prune the roots on one or more elms when you do repot the roots leaving just a nub sticking out of the soil. By mid summer you should have plants and if you plant these in the ground in one or two years you may have one inch trunks that are five or six feet tall, time to dig and cut again. The cycle will never end so select excellent material to begin with. One of the elms that we are propigating with great success is Carl Youngs Sayju elm. This plant has a very dense growth habit and excellent cork bark. We started four years ago with one plant and currently have abour 180 in the ground. When we transplant these elms we will generally get about five good trees from every one that we transplant. This spring we will transplant 80 of these elms so I am hoping to push the numbers on this tree to over five hundred this spring.

Re: good deals on saplings
here in buffalo NY I can't find any elm trees in the area 90% are oak and maples. If there is a place to find Chinese elms I would like ot know. Second I am going to plant them on my Uncles tree farm and propagate them and sell them for bonsai that is why I bought so many.

Re: good deals on saplings
Frenchman: You would love the central san waquine valley. Our growing season is so long that we can get almost three years growth in one summer. You would have to see it for yourself and compair trees to really appreciate what I mean. Good luck with your elm venture and keep us posted as to how they do.

Re: good deals on saplings
Hi Frenchman,
If you are out in New York, you should visit Bill Valavanis's International Bonsai Arboretum. He propagates a lot of bonsai material and starter stock. The website is http://www.internationalbonsai.com/index.html Click on the catalog for seedlings. http://www.internationalbonsai.com/catalog/cat.html I think he's out in Rochester. But I may be mistaken. There's a map on the webpage but no address and I am a geographically challenged Californian

Re: good deals on saplings
i pull half a dozen out of my garden each year.thats not counting the ones i leave to be mowed down.
maybe we can work a trade somewhere down the line. also, the neighbors built a wall, and the roots left in our yard are sprouting up a storm.i have one singled out to pot up next year.ought to make an interesting bonsai.

Re: Would be happy to..
I would be happy to do some trading I don't think I will ever have enough trees, but space to grow them is another matter all together. But I am sure I can make the space for them, I always do. Just a further note I am currently growing Paper Birch, and by next spring I will have plenty to trade and sell. So anyone intrested in trading please contact me via my Email.

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Re: good deals on saplings
Just got home from a long weekend. Saw this post and had to put my 2 cents in. Bill Valavanis is out of Rochester NY I visited him in the spring. I can not say enough good things about HIM his trees or his place. DO go DO buy and DO enjoy. If I was not nearly 5 hours away I would be there every week and probable be without any money.
