I think that if you tie a live tree to dead wood with rafia, the live tree will eventually grow into the dead wood. Maybe thats what he's doing.

.........it's not called a Phoenix Graft, it's called a "Tenuki". Tenuki is the name of an animal in Japan.......looks something like a racoon.....and the tenuki is known for tricking people.....so, when you carve a groove in a piece of deadwood, insert a "whip" of a tree, usually done with junipers, and the tree grows into the groove and eventually looks like a whole living tree with much deadwook.......it's called a Tenuki Style Bonsai. I've seen many of them and some are very attractive, but "bonsai purists" don't accept them as the real thing. I've even seen them entered in shows and exhibits, and as long as they're described as "tenuki", I see nothing wrong with it, although there are those who object to this....just as some may object to the way I've written this....in the style of "three dot journalism". Some people just seem to look at the world from atop a very high horse, and that's alright with me too. I guess we all choose our vantage points. Perhaps even the word "tenuki" has fallen into some other popular use and definition......and I'm not yet aware of it.
.........and if that is the case, please enlighten me. Yes, I'm poking some gentle fun at some of the "exhaustive" threads we can see on Bonsaitalk. One time in Japan I visited the "Ceramic town" of Iberaki, and remember seeing almost "acres" of ceramic Tunukis......the little animals, in all sizes, some even eight feet tall.....many as "couples" and sexually explicitly defined, standing around the vendor's house. I found it very amusing, but apparently having figures such as these suggest good luck, fertility, etc. in Japan. There are many gardens with a tenuki, (ceramic animal) sitting in it. ......but now I'm rambling, which is something I really don't want to do on this thread, so I'll end for now. "Tanuki" is the Japanese word for "badger." In bonsai, it's pretty much the same idea as what we call a "Phoenix graft" in English. The Phoenix idea is from the idea of the tree arising out of its own dead skeleton, like a Phoenix from its own ashes.
Regards, Matt

no...this is no joke. it seems like that most folks on these forums are thinking it is. i have been growing bonsai's for years and enjoy it. i have had many people who have seen mine get inspired to try it on their own, go out and buy the most expensive tree they can find, have it for a short while until it dies from undercare. it is a shame that people don't take you serious that these trees are more like pets. they need to be cared for daily.
anyway, some of these trees that i have seen die where good solid trees with excellent character. i am trying an experiment with the dead bonsais that may help these non-green thumbed people. this is why i am looking for the dead trees. anyone out there that can help i will certainly post pictures once i had completed the project. thanks in forward. |
