What kind of weather can bonsai trees handle and when should i get them insight or so ? *For Example, My Acer Pal. Should it be protected when there's a lot of wind/storm ? What about other species ?

Re: Weather

My trees ride out the weather right on their benches. * Usually, this is not a problem

Exceptions would be:
[*]If you think the wind will be so strong that it puts the trees or benches in danger of falling over. * In Japan they sometimes tie the trees to their pedestals to guard against earthquake and gales. * Smaller bonsai and in particular, cascade type trees seem to be the most vulnerable to wind because of their precarious balance and sometimes small footprint.
[*]If you are near the coast and are anticipating *hurricane type weather with salt in the rain, you would want to cover or otherwise protect the trees.
[*]Whenever your trees are in danger from falling objects like tree limbs and things like that, it might be a good idea to relocate them, perhaps under the benches or in some better sheltered area.
[*]Protection that some plants need from extremely hot or cold weather.

NOTE: When rain goes on for a couple days uninterrupted, prop the pots at an angle to help improve drainage (it makes the pot "deeper"), and the capillary action that holds water in shallow pots is overcome. *Wait a couple days and tilt the pots in the other direction.

We had some phenomenal rain a few years back. *Most of my bonsai are in a low area and I actually had to wade out in boots (maybe 5-6 inches deep) to clean up debris and leaves that had fallen. *

Regards,

Matt

Re: Weather

Thanx for the info. We don't have hurricanes and earthquakes in the Netherlands, but sometimes we have a lot of wind and rain for days. Is there something on the market that i can put on my pots to protect them from to much rain ?

Re: Weather

You could probably get some inexpensive or disposable shower caps and cut a slot from one edge to the center. Then pull the edges around the pot with the trunk poking through the center, exposed to the air. Use a clothespin or a binder clip to hold the cut edge closed. You don't want it airtight, just mostly closed.

I did a stretch test on a showercap we have here. It looks like it could cover a pot about 14x8 inches or so. The ideal fabric for something like this might be one of those car covers made of Goretex because the water bounces off, but the vapor can escape. Maybe there is a future market for the Goretex bonsai rain apron?

Most deciduous trees don't have any problem with some extended rain, but the pines can suffer if they get too wet.
