Styling Contest Voting Deadline Extended. Server Move Complete

UPDATE:
As of Thursday, May 4, 2005 we are on the new server!
VOTING IS BACK ON!
http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthread.php?t=11522

Deadline extended to May 9, 2005
I should be turning on the Check your Votes tool within the next day.

UPDATE: WEDS MAY 3, 2005
We are in the process of relocating. The new site should appear automagically in 24-48 hours.

UPDATE: SUN, APR 31, 2005:
There have been a number of issues recently with our hosting provider that will require us to move bonsaiTALK to a new server to avoid continuing problems:

1. We've been unable to send out the April Newsletter inviting the general membership to participate in voting and advise them of pending deadlines

2. There have been some issues recently involving the connections to the database that might affect the integrity of the website. I don't believe there has been any loss or corruption of data as a result of this problem, but we need to be conservative to avoid problems.

In the meantime, I am temporarily suspending voting and deadlines in the bonsaiTALK Styling and Articles contests.

When we get to our new host and things are working more reliably, I will turn voting features back on. The deadlines will be extended once we get to the new server.

In the meantime I have made a backup of the database as of today, and we'll be watching for database problems in the meantime. I have also set maximum on the simultaneous user sessions to 45. This means that some users might be turned away during periods of peak activity.

I'll give you more information as it becomes available. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to ask.

I apologize for this inconvenience. It has been a very difficult period.

Regards,

Matt

Matt

Only 45 members or total user at any given time?
Thats to bad. Can't wait for it to be fixed.
Good Luck Matt

Matt just keep us posted, would it help if we all tried to use the forum at differing times of the day? Something like the water shortage useage some of us have had to deal with.
Say......15 minute useages.....

example
Europe Asia and Australia O'clock till 15 after
Eastern time zone 15 after till 30
Central and rocky mountain time zone 30 till 45
Western Time zone 45 till the hour

just a thought
Jay

Matt: I'm sure I speak for many when I say "THANK YOU" for dealing with all the technical poopery it takes to run this gig. You rock.

Matt:

I suspect that I am not the only one who keeps BonsaiTalk open in a minimized window when not active.

Would closing that window help with the user count, and thus not take up one of the limited user slots?

Hmm,
Seems I have finally been able to get through and post. For the amount of traffic this website gets daily, forty five seems very low. Maybe this is an indicator that we need to make some more donations to the forum. I will see if I can send one within the next few days.

Is there a planned date when we will be getting the new server?

Hi Bart,

It shouldn't make a big difference. A unique user session ends about 10 minutes after the last activity, whether you have an open window or not.

Thanks for thinking, though!

Matt

Hi Charles,

Thanks for thinking about this. Actually the new server is going to cost more, probably about twice the current expenditure on a monthly a basis.

Regards,

Matt

I'm already missing the ease of access and unlimited surfing on the website. I plan to contribute $$$ as soon as I can shake a few extra dollars out of the budget. Things are tight right now or I would have already contributed...

Matt, should "we" consider a sensible membership fee to help support the site?

I know that thought might make everyone groan, but I use the site every day, several hours at a time. I could more easily justify sending money if I could explain to my spouse that there is a fee...just a thought.

What does everyone else here think?
