IBC's REC.ARTS.BONSAI Now Online

I'm evaluating a feature that will allow bonsaiTALK readers to follow the postings to the rec.arts.bonsai list in a dedicated forum right here at bonsaiTALK.

1. Currently, if you are logged in, you can read but not post to rec.arts.bonsai

2. It's possible that we might have posting in the future, but we would need moderators to ensure that the outgoing posts are not spam-laden tripe. If you are interested in moderating the IBC forum, please let me know. Ideally you'd be visiting approximately once a day and able to read a half dozen outgoing posts (estimated). PM me if you're interested - otherwise there won't be any posting.

3. Currently this forum is only updated sporadically. I'm still learning how this software works so I have no idea how frequently we will do this. We'll probably have one update per day.

So - here's the new forum!

I like having seperate sights. If I were to wander there because I am bored, I will. I just feel that the forum is large enough to wander thru like it is.

Thanks, Al

Matt,

It's a cute feature, but....

...one thing that is really frustrating is that all of the IBC posts show up in the "New Messages" search. I already get the digest by email, and usually skim it because I prefer the discussions here.

Cheers,
Carl

There is no rec.arts.bonsai site. It's a mail list that's accessible on lots of news services, dejanews. This isn't what internetbonsaiclub.com has in their interactive galleries, if that's what you mean.

Regards,

Matt

Well it is not intended to be a cute feature. The bonsaismileys are intended to be cute

I think I can fix that search issue relatively easily. I'll have to play around with it.

Regards,

Matt

It was relatively simple to remove the IBC listing from the search results. That's how I've left it, but I'm not altogether sure that's the best way to handle it:

Since this was the first import, we pulled in an entire month's worth of posts at one time (296 posts). That won't be typical. I would expect to see roughly 10 posts per day over the same 30-day period.

So I will leave IBC search off for now, but will probably turn it on again at some point in the near future.

Regards,

Matt

UPDATE -

1) I have enabled posting by registered bonsaiTALK members to the REC.ARTS.BONSAI forum.

You may Reply to existing posts by clicking the REPLY or QUOTE buttons, or by using the QUICK REPLY BOX at the bottom of each of that forum's pages. Replies only may be posted - posting new topics to that forum are not accepted at this time, but this may change.

Comments the REC.ARTS.BONSAI forum are moderated because they go out by email to a large group of people. Moderation means that the posts will be reviewed by a moderator prior to publication, and will not immediately appear on the site.

2) New posts from the REC.ARTS.BONSAI list are pulled in automatically every few hours, so there should not be a large mass of [IBC] posts cluttering the index at any one time. Typically there are about six IBC posts each day. Most all of them are identified with [IBC] in the subject line.

3) I have turned on search and status updates for the IBC forum. Posts made to it will show on the forum index and the daily posts, and that forum can be searched now along with the rest.

It's possible we'll need to make additional refinements in the near future, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask them here.

Regards,

Matt

Hi Matt, a quick question. If registered bonsaiTALK users post, what gets imbedded into the message: the BT username or the poster's email address?

The reason I ask is that I can trace back the influx of 'less than salubrious' spam to the one time in the past that I posted a message in the ibc mail list.

Regards,

Chris.

Hi Chris, it's a good question.

Posts in the email should be tagged with the FROM ADDRESS at the bonsaitalk domain

FROM: username@timelimit.bonsaiTALK.com

So for mine, the author was listed as:

TreeBay

Then it added my forum signature and a link to my profile
Quote:

I think that would make you

Treebeard.####.timelimit.bonsaiTALK.com

Which isn't a valid address anyway. But you might wait it out for verification if you are worried about it.

Regards,

Matt
