Bandwidth Update - July 2008
The bandwidth situation looks good this month. We're at 59% against a 110GB capacity and the month's about 66% over. (See attached chart)
There was a brief outage at the end of June (red arrow on the chart), but bonsaiTALK has a good record of uptime for the year. The same chart runs back through January with no significant outage. I've seen some snipes against bonsaiTALK on this point, but when the other sites start pushing a Terabyte of bonsai a year, we can start comparing apples with apples: Some discussion has taken place on bonsaiTALK Community concerning month-end bandwidth concerns. The commmunity currently has over 21,000 members and more than a quarter million posts on bonsai-related topics. In late June '08 the site exceeded its 100 Gigabyte bandwidth limit, resulting in a shutdown until a request to increase the bandwidth by 10% could be implemented by the web host. We're at 110GB monthly, but demand's up and it's a seasonal interest. This June overage was caused by a perfect storm of events, not the least of which was heavy search engine spidering on June 29, which resulted in 752 simultaneous spiders trying to grab text and photos simultaneously. This happened several months back and the solution at that time was to shut down access to some of the more aggressive search engines. We've had some discussion with alternate web hosts, but so far, the current one has been the most reliable, responsive and forgiving when we have temporary dmanad increases. We may be fast approaching the point where we can no longer depend on shared hosting, which, while economical, is dependent on slicing the resources of a single web server to service several websites. This is a tough step to take because it increases costs approximately 4-fold while requiring increased oversight on site security and backups. We'll keep the community posted as more develops on this front!
