Big Smile Yellowing Juniper

Hello all. Please help me with my Chinese Juniper. I've had it for 1 year, bought from nursery stock, outdoor living with full sun. All growth is supple, and new growth is apparent all over. Natural rain and suppliment watering as needed. Mild fertilizer every couple of weeks. It is in basic organic soil.

Problem: all greenery is not very green. very pale green bordering on yellowing. no dieback, very open pads. Does my plant need nitrogen? new soil? Please help! THanks

Sometimes growing some Junipers in full sun will cause the growth to become a bit yellow. This I find particularly common with Shimpaku Junipers. Also new growth tends to be a bit yellow. It is also possible that if you are growing it in just plain old potting soil or garden soil it might be having a drainage problem. This will also cause a degree of yellowing and if this continues you could lose the tree, if the condition is serious enough. Try moving the tree into at least partial shade and do not water till it starts to dry out.

UPDATE:

I did wholesale soil changes and I am happy to report that the soil was the problem. TOO WET! I was just using potting mix.

I have now switched to a 80-90% aquatic soil mix and all my plants are lovin it. Especially this Juniper.

Whew. I did not want to lose this one. It has a ton of potential.

Tons of new growth and better color.

Later.

G'day Raj...

Have you considered joining a bonsai club? There are a number of clubs relatively close to you.

A club affiliation might have helped you avoid the "organic soil" problem you had last year.

Try it...it might work for you...
