When to pot up nuresery stock in NE?
I have a Buxus and a small-leafed azalea that I purchased as rejects from a garden center. Both seem to have great promise as bonsai as they have interesting and well developed trunks.
My question is when do I first pot them up as bonsai? I have typically overwintered such plants in a cold but well-lit attic (temp about 35-50 F) and then planted in garden in Spring but this is the first time Ive wanted to use nursery stock for bonsai. Thanks! |

Re: When to pot up nuresery stock in NE?
Hi JLK,
These are both vigorous shrubs so they can tolerate quite a bit more abuse than most trees. Azaleas are typically repotted immediately after flowering. In fact you want to do this after about 3/4 of the flowers have opened. There is some info on the TreeBay.com site under Articles on repotting azalea. They can withstand severe cutback. If it is a Satsuki azalea, you may find it blooms sometime in early summer. Kurume azalea blooms earlier. Other varieties like Southern Indica azalea will bloom at other periods. Boxwood is a strong plant. You can cut back quite a bit. Be sure to remove top growth in balance with the root pad, which you should find to be very thick and fibrous on a healthy tree. Repotting in spring is fine. The flowers are pretty insignificant on box, but you can also use this as a guide for transplanting. The fact the trees came from nursery stock doesn't have much bearing on the repotting time. As a general rule, you can safely remove 1/2 to 2/3 of these shrubs' root mass provided you keep it in balance with the top growth.

Re: When to pot up nuresery stock in NE?
Thanks TreeBay & BonsaiNut
BUT... Does reducing root mass by 2/3 mean I should decrease the plant with successive repottings over time? (i.e. reduce top & bottom by 2/3, put into a training pot, WAIT AN ETERNITY, then pot down into a bonsai pot? Would you suggest waiting a full year to do this? Although I am itchy to get going I'm sure willing to wait if this is the best course. Thanks! You guys kick bonsai-butt! |

Re: When to pot up nuresery stock in NE?
It really depends on your goals. If you just want to get some trees in bonsai pots, you can usually make the transition from nursery container to bonsai pot in 2 years (two repottings with most species)
The good news is that for the types of plants you mentioned, azaleas, probably your boxwood if it is healthy, and other trees with compact root systems, you might be able to plant in a slightly oversized bonsai container in a single transplanting. A lot depends on how the root system looks. This would not be a good thing to do with a pine. : If you choose to do this, be sure to do the repotting work during the optimum repotting seasons, which would be around spring for your boxwood and early summer for the azalea. If, on the other hand, the tree isn't very well developed, you might consider repotting into a large container or the ground to develop the trunk for a couple years, then back into a growing container for a couple more and wind up with a tree that will really knock their socks off. My suggestion would be to do a little of both. Have some short term projects to keep you enthused and some long term ones to work on developing technique.
