It looks more like Zelkova Serrata. Highly serrated leaves and red twigs are a give away for Zelkova. This is a great species for bonsai and not that easy to come by. Chinese Elm does not have the red twigs (that I remember) or leaves so prominently serrated. Zelkova is sometime called Grey Barked Chinese Elm. It is a member of the Ulmus family.

I'm with Vance on this one, the leaves are more serrated than the typical C. Elm.

Yep, zelkova. I have several of these and the leaves are spot on - more pointy than chinese elm. Looks like some one tried to get it moving toward a broom style. I have seen many pics of Japanese gray bark elm (same as zelkova serrata) in that style. They make good candidates because of the fine branching and the leaves that reduce quite well.
Can't quite tell the spacing of the limbs - are they all to the back in the second pic with a sizable scar on the front? The scar should heal nicely in time, but you might need to correct the limbs so that they are spaced well around the trunk. Good Luck |
