I suppose that in some tropical clime zamia grows to great heights compared to what you have there. It's a slow grower, and unless you live somewhere where it can be exposed to nature the year round you'll probably be waiting a long time for it to "grow up".

Leaf reduction is probably not possible.

Also, it doesn't really grow upward with a typical trunk. It is typically used as low growing ground cover.

I've wondered about that on Sago's. I see some that look like palms, 5-15 feet high, and some that are like 3 foot high shrubs. I'm not sure what causes the difference, wind maybe?

I'ts definitely not a sago palm, I used to have one and it had much narrower and more linear fronds/leaflets which were more parallel sided, thinner and darker green also.

Zamia furfuracea, commonly known as Cardboard Palm, is a cycad native to southeastern Veracruz state in eastern Mexico. Although not a true palm, its growth habit is superficially similar to a palm; other names include Cardboard Plant, Cardboard Sago, Cardboard Cycad, and Mexican Cycad (above from wikipedia)

I think what has evolved is this. The Sago palm(cycad also) is a popular item for landscapes in Japan. In the past many of our bonsai men of Japanese decent put sagos in bonsai pots, . They are long lived, very easy to maintain, are agreeable to pot culture, and reminded them of home.

But Sagos are slow to grow and hard to propagate=expensive. Zamia the poor cousin is also slow but easy to propagate=more profit. So Creaters of the million mallsai march each holiday season use the zamia as a cheaper version of the sago in a bonsai pot.
