What Do You Think About This?

I've been searching for a flowering apricot bonsai and finally came up with one, but it appears the bark is peeling a little bit, does this look like a problem or is this normal for this type of tree? thanks Dave

It could be completely normal. I have a prunus mume covered with deep fissured bark.

Fruit trees don't live as long as most other trees. A fifty-year-old fruit tree in the garden is probably getting close to end of life, because they become increasingly susceptible to disease. They can live longer in bonsai pots, however.

Check the area around the trunk for signs of sap that has spilled out. Flowering apricots can get a kind of vascular disease that obstructs the flow of sap and can cause the death of branches or a portion of the tree. In any case, branches do die and it
s a fact of life. You'll often see flowering apricot styled with deadwood quite a lot for this reason. If the budding looks good, there is probably no problem at this time.

Good luck,

Matt
