What is "bonsai?"
Bonsai is an art form based on the cultivation and display of trees and shrubs that have been dwarfed naturally or artificially so as to create the illusion of a natural planting in miniature.
Bonsai originated in China and the practice migrated to other parts of the asian continent along with the practice of Zen Buddhism and the Tea Ceremony. There, these plants were are known as "penjing." Bonsai was further advanced upon its arrival in Japan, with the introduction of new techniques and its refinement into various bonsai styles. Today, we recognize Japan as the center of the bonsai world, where many influential artists and growers continue this tradition of refinement.
