I sometimes use milking fat. Now imagine the conversation when I buy a box of this fat, which one puts on the hands to glide over the tits of the cow nicely. But sure is cheap and smooth. And ist stay on for more than a year!! I have prove of that.

BTW: In only use some protectant in order to avoid dehydration in some instances. Most of the time I use nothing. It is state of the art in contemporary gardening education to NOT use sealants. They don't do the job that you think they do. Even worse, they provide a great microclimate for all sorts of critters and fungi that will fall all over your tree.

I have used modeling clay for about 15 years now and I love it.
It never hardens and allows the wound to continue to seal itself pushing the clay off when it is totaly healed.
I like the way it looks as well because I match the color to the bark of the tree.
I have even textured it with a piece of bark giving it the same look as the bark around the wound, it's almost invisible that way.

Mike bag balms da bomb, never tried it on trees, but I grew up going to a farm so often for summers, that stuff is a staple at my house forever.

Mike, my parents use that on their heels on the time, apparently very softening? Have you had any results with the Bag Balm?

I've used it for years to heal painful cracks in the skin on my fingers. Great stuff!!
