Vaseline as wound sealant??

I read on a previous thread that someone uses Vaseline as a sealant (among other things, including engine grease!). I have not been able to buy any real sealant as of yet, so will this work ok? If so, do I have to remove it after a little while so the bark can grow back, or do I need to re-apply after some time?

Conifers respond well to vaseline.I have seen huge wounds on Nick Lenz larches that were healed using vaseline. He usually tops a blob off with alum.foil.Be sure to put it on right away to keep wound slick and moist.Preparation-H for decidous.Yes it works but only the OINTMENT style.
best stuff.
cheers,
Crust

Crust, at risk of inciting some really bad humor I have a question:

when you say the ointment style, do you mean the thicker stuff in a tube?

I only ask because while there's not a bonsai store within 50 miles of me that I know of, there are plenty of drug stores and groceries.

Seems odd that being smack between DC and Baltimore I can't find a bonsai place, but could be I;m not looking hard enough.

Anyway, thanks for any info.

I'm a bit confused about the whole wound sealing thing. I'm a huge newb so I know nothing from experience which is always the best way to learn. But, I've heard you can use ton's of differn't things including mud and glue as well. Last year I used some sealent in a green tube w/ japanese writing, which looks gross and I can't get it off my trees.

I've also heard Walter Paul say you don't even need to use anything. Does it really matter that you seal wounds? What exactly does sealing wounds do?

Thanks

Hi Crust,

Preparation -H for sealing? What's mechanism for this treament? If it works, I think it is too expensive for sealing purpose. Bonhe

i didnt know vasaline works?

well most of the comercial wound sealers have some sort of hormones in it to help growth and recovery

so its just better off buying the real stuff.....theyre not expensive

The trick is to keep the wood you want to heal over from drying out, so that the tree scars over the cut, the vasaline and P. H works, been to the Ogres place and seen it in person. Sometime it will be necessary to reopen the scar to complete the process. Good ole Elmers glue will work too.

Engine grease! I think you will be hard pressed to get someone to recommend that.

Have fun going to the store and buying tubes of preperation H, then trying to explain about using them for bonsai.

I read of using both... by experience, I've only used vaseline on a Gingko. Has worked just fine on it. I use cut paste and Shin-Kiyonaal... the kiyonaal is the stuff that yenling is speaking of. After it is applied, you leave it alone. It hardens and becomes almost transparent. Although I have found out the hard way to not use it on my ulmus parviflora... it left the bark on the trunk with a greasy looking stain.

Cheers,

Brian
