Unknown raffle prize (oak??)
I won this little oak (I guess) at a club raffle last month. It had been through a lot (borers, other insects and too much direct sun) but it's starting to come around. It originally had narrow leaves about 1 1/2" long. The new growth has larger leaves that are very holly-like. Any info or guesses are appreciated.
Please forgive the camera phone quality. Mike Watson |

Live Oak
I went to a place that sells live oaks yesterday and they had some saplings that look just like this. The funny thing is that I asked several people (one was a landscape engineer) what it was and no one could give it a positive ID! Maybe because they are so common around here that no one ever pays them any attention.
Anyway... mystery solved. Mike |

From what I've read, oak species are prone to hybridization so often it can be difficult to distinguish between different species within the genus.

Very true. I never realised how many differences there were with our very common local tree (If you want to see a live oak around here all you have to do is look out any window. The only tree seen more around here is the Ashe juniper).
There is also a big difference between juvenile and mature leaves with the live oak. A fact I never realised until just recently. Juvenile foliage looks like what I have on my raffle tree. Mature foliage is much smaller and oval shaped with smooth edges. Cheers! Mike |
