This tree seems too tall by about 100% to me. If you let the branches grow out, you may or may not be able to fill in that area, but then what do you have? A tall, thick trunk with no taper. This trunk has a lot of character which will become spectacular as two shorter trees. As to the top of the tree, I would remove the heavy chunk on the left, thin it considerably. If doing an air-layering, wouldn't you do it below the "bad area" (reverse taper)?

Regardless of the texture bark, if he "jabs" (scares) the trunk in a certian area only, it will look different from the rest of the tree/trunk.
