The planters I have designed do not need to be elevated because the bottoms are recessed and do not come into contact with the surface they sit upon. In context of winter storage they do not need, or should they be, burried. Mulching is OK but I have found this to be unnecessary.

Thanks Vance! And all this time I've been blocking mine up. So my bonsai will survive the Michigan winters in your planters without mulching the sides?

Errrrr.... by the way, I hope you don't mind that I included your planters in my examples. hey are just so darn attractive and functional not to mention.

One other feature I have noticed about Vance's pots is that the bottom can be pushed upward to facilitate removal of the root mass. This was quite an ingenious addition.

I have added a new style of training box to my collection that I thought I'd add to this thread. The use of came out of a shortage of large training pots and a lack of time to build some.

I was desperate for a couple large size boxes for some freshly collected trees when I spied my neighbors trash, lol. He was tossing out a couple beaten up dressers and it didn't take me long before I had the drawers in my garage and was drilling drainage and wire holes in the bottom.

Imagine Vance Wood's surprise when I came to the meeting yesterday with a very large freshly collected cedar and a drawer, lol.

I find the drawers will last only about two years before the bottom rots completely out, but that is about time for a re-pot anyhow. They are semi-attractive and easy to move. Be sure, if you use them, to place bricks underneath to allow for air circulation.

Will, I went to a great Bonsai nursrey for some help with repotting a tree, that is a little bigger then a pencil-{trunk}. He took the tree out of it's training pot cut the roots a put it in a bonsai pot. I was suprised! The tree didn't even have branches and he put it in a bonsai pot. He said that the bonsai pot restrictes upward growth not branch, trunk growth what do you think of that? P.s he is an expert in the field.

Elm, I too would be interested in hearing who this 'expert' is and what nursery he is at.... It will give that much more meaning to your post.
