Exclamation PLS Help - Can I save this tree??

Hi Guys,

I went climbing on the weekend and literally found a bonsai growing in the wild. Im not sure what kind it is, it has similar leaves to a white monkey thorn, but they are a little bit larger and it had a small pod growing on one of the branches?

Anyways, this tree is sitting right at the bottom of a climbing route. Its been trampelled a bit by climbers, and some branches are broken, not completely off though. The odd thing is, the leaves etc above the broken branches are still alive and havent died yet. Not sure if they will eventually though...

Is it possible to take this tree out and report it at home? What are the chances of saving it cos I recon it wont last much longer there, and if I try to mend the brocken branches, how do I go about doing it??

Sorry there are no pics....didnt have a camera....

Thanks SB

It's impossible for us to say, without knowing what kind of tree it is. Very few people on the forum live in your area, we aren't familiar with the native species.

First of all, if it's on government or private land, you have to get permission. Don't know what the rules are over there, but here it is a crime to remove the tree, especially from a protected area where hikers go.

If you can get permission, then you might as well try to remove it. There are several really good threads here about collecting trees. Using the search button above, type in "collecting" and read some of the information. Each tree has a good time to collect, so if you can figure out when the best time is to remove it, that would help.

Good luck!

Joanie's right. Get permission before you dig. If it's on a heavily travelled hiking trail, yoiu will get alot of questions, possibly some hostility from hikers when they see you "defiling" their trail. Won't make any difference if the tree's done for. They won't care.

As for the tree's survival, it all depends on how much root you can get and the amount of damage to the main trunk...

The land doesnt belong to anyone...its used by climbers...and thats about it. The tree is sitting about 3 feet up from the ground on a climbing route. From what I can remember, just 2 of the 3 branches are broken and the trunk is fine. It looked like a type of acacia too.

Dont want to leave it there too long, as it seems to be taking a hammering from climbers. Think I will make a turn there in the next day or 2 and collect it. Cant hurt! Will do a search on collecting. Thanks for the advice!

You might be surprised at the reaction you recieve from some hikers when they see you hacking the tree out of the ground.

I would also find it hard to believe the land isn't owned by anyone. If you start digging and someone sees you, you may become acquainted with the owners sooner than your think...Find out who owns the land. Ask permission--this is a cardnial rule for bonsai collectors. Don't ignore it.
