Making Mine Bigger

I was wondering if putting my 7" juniper bonsai into a larger pot would help it grow a few inches taller. I would really like my tree to be a bit bigger, and fatter.

Im aware that this will take years to do, but its not a bad thing to know now.

Also, im guessing I should repot it in the Spring.

Thanks

A larger pot can contribute to growth, but there are diminishing returns. Also, the sun warms the pot and can help the root system to grow somewhat if you are in a cool climate. Of course it can cook the root system if the sun is too hot or the pot is too small.

A picture would be a help in judging whether your tree needs up-potting. If the plant is healthy, you could probably transfer it to a larger container at any time, so long as you don't disrupt the root system much. In any case fall is also a good time for transplanting if you don't get hard freezes in your area.

Good luck,

Matt

Well, do you want size or the illusion of size?

Actually a pot that is less broad may make your tree look a lot better. So will training it so that it isn't quites so shrubby, but has a distinct trunk line and defined branching.

On the other hand, putting it into a big pot may make it grow more quickly but look small.

Regards,

Matt

Check your subscriptions and your subscription preferences and set your Default Thread Subscription Mode to Daily or Weekly or something.

Most plants will grow more quickly in larger containers. There is a diminishing return as the container size increases. You may find it hard to keep the tree stable or provide adequate fertilizer - because you're probably fertilizing the soil, not the tree.

Regards,

Matt

what do you mean by diminishing return? What would u suggest for fertilizing then?

Thanks a lot for the help!

It's when a whole lot more effort gives you just a little more benefit.

You'd need a big bag of fertilizer or a cow.

Just a quick, perhaps too obvious comment: Using a pot with a very large lip on the inside will make repotting very difficult. I used a pot like this once and when it came time to repot vowed never to do so again.
