Lichen on Black Pine
I have this fairly old black pine in my collection which has lichen living on the bark. Every year i notice the lichen has increased. My question is will the lichen have any adverse effect on the trees' health? I understand that lichen on tree bark is highly prized in Japan. I was once told that as i live in a very clean part of the world that is why the lichen is thriving. Your views would be appreciated.

Lichens can be very attractive. They aren't parasitic, but moderation is important in all things bonsai related.

Lichen and New Buds
Matt is right. I would also add that you do not want lichen growing in places where you might like to get back budding. On elms, at least, new buds don't seem to develop in lichen covered areas even thought the lichen is as thin as tissue paper. Just my observation.
Cheers, Jim |
