Thanks Treebay, could you do me a favor and show a pic of specifically how you tied the tree in? I have yet to see a pic of an expert doing that. I tied in my last repot and it helped but it wasn't near that stable.

If you have one, I'd love to see it.

Very informative, thanks a bunch Matt.

I like the tree alot, It's a gorgeous tree. I really liked the first pot too, and I didn't think I'd like the new one, but after it was finnished, I really enjoy the look of the new pot.

Excellent job, thanks for sharing.

Brett

Ah - a straight staple man!

Thanks for the on-line demo, Matt! I was going to check out the link for that pot until I heard the price tag. I must say that it is very unique. It reminds me of the free form slabs that you see constructed in some of the bonsai mags.

Just curious - what is your experience with pinching back leaves on the hornbeam? I recall that Al mentioned that it was a good idea to leave at least 3 or more. I have been wondering if that is why one of mine seems to be stalled a bit right now.

Hi Mittar,

Check out the video segments 15-19 here:

No dazzle wire, but it should help explain things.

Regards,

Matt

The shoots usually come out in five to seven alternate leaves. I'll pinch back to two around the apex and terminal branches, and maybe three on the lower ones.

I haven't found hornbeam to be particularly weak, but it does like more moisture - like an understory tree. If you treat it about like birch, it should do well. IF it gets very hot, you'd want to position it in some partial sun/shade. They are twiggy trees, so you may see them out all over rather than pushing a very strong apex.

Sometimes, lack of vigor can be traced to the root system; either not enough room to spread, inadequate drainage or low soil fertility.

Regards,

Matt

Display tables

I'm new to the bonsai talk board and have only been collecting bonsai for about 18 months, I joined our local bonsai club a few months ago I really enjoy the people envolved with bonsai.
Our club is putting on a bonsai show in the latter part of May and I want to show some of my trees, and I would like to display them on tables. I bought a couple of very nice tables on ebay, but I really like the table in the very first picture in this thread.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a source for this quality of display table.

Cool hornbeam

Matt, excellent tree, good pot choice and a very good demonstration. I too have purchased stock material at the Sacramento bonsai show. Maybe, I will see you there this coming April.
