Back to work! Add more soil and work it into place with bonsai chopsticks. Continue this process for at least 5-10 minutes to insure that all the air pockets have been removed. Drive soil in toward the base of the tree, working from the outside inward.

Tamp the soil down, pressing firmly around the perimeter to help prevent it from washing away as the soil is watered in.

Here's the hornbeam shown together with a Flowering Crabapple. I've added a larger display stand made of Keyaki wood.

Some notes on aftercare:

Here it's mid-spring already and the tree is beginning to leaf out.. Ideally you want to repot before bud break. If the tree is healthy and a strong specimen like this hornbeam, there should be little risk. Even so, I will reduce the foliage a little. We'll want to be especially careful to make sure the tree doesn't dry out.

Everyone out there should read this!

Matt,

This is an exceptional step by step of the repotting process. Great for beginners. Thanks, I recommend it for all! Your photography and trees are above average as usual. Thanks again for your efforts to enrich us!

Weight = Heavy! They are at least as dense as fired clay, and much heavier than mica. They feel like stone.

Regards,

Matt
