Korean Hornbeam Repot

This is an article covering the repot of a Korean Hornbeam. I bought this tree at the Sacramento, CA, GSBF convention several years ago. At that time it didn't have any branches or an apex, and the trunk had some hollows internally as a result of borers.

I carved out the deadwood and filled the voids with a two-part expoxy. In a couple of years the tree was thriving, and the branches have all since been grown on.

This tree will be repotted into a new container manufactured by Michigander Pots http://www.michiganderpots.com .

These shallow, slab-like pots are constructed in a very dense resin that looks and feels like ceramic. Each pot design is available in a variety of colors.

This style is called the "Old Horse Plateau"

Getting the pot ready

We'll start by getting the pot ready. Cutting some drainage mesh is the first step. We'll need one piece for each of the six holes provided.

Now some wire staples will be used to secure each drainage square. The wire is formed in the jaws of a pair of pliers to get nice square corners.

Yep, Al, that's "dazzle wire!" Anodized in a blue color rather than copper. It really does photograph much better!

Spread the legs of the staple on the bottom of the pot to secure the drainage screen firmly in place.

We'll also need a couple of wires to secure the tree in the pot

Cut any wires securing the tree in its existing container and then ease it out of the pot. Here you can see the relative size of the root mass and the new pot. The root system is nice and shallow, so this won't be a problem.

Cleaning up the trunk

Using a brass wire brush, we'll clean up the surface rootage. Moss can be nice, but it can also get out of hand. This variety isn't really a very desirable type. We'll carefully brush the strands away from the trunk and off the surface of the soil.
