Opinion J. Maple seeds falling

I have a large thread leaf japanese maple with one year old seedling nearby. I would like to plant more. But, the seeds are falling now (June zone 6). The info I've been reading so far indicates seeds should be harvested in Fall when the leaves drop? Help?

Try it, it might work. I currently have a few seedlings (Ulmus, Acer, Fraxinus) in a propagator, all grown from seeds I collected on the floor a few weeks ago!

for what its worth...i read an article one time about a controlled test on the viability of seeds from jap maple in different months of the year...long story short, the most viable seeds were collected between july and august...i cant recall what zone the test was conducted in though...

with that out of the way...my personal opinion is that if you start collecting now and continue until fall, the worse thing that could happen is that some wont sprout (but this will happen even under the best circumstances) so you really have nothing to loose...another word of advice is that jap maple seeds often have better success when subjected to a pre treatment/ and or stratification period...

Try this link, I think Brent has some article on J Maple proagation.

http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/articles.htm

I remember taht they want to be used fresh, and not let them dry out.

I would collect them, and plant them, see what you get.

Thumbs up

Thank you for the advice. I will plant every seed that falls (in between torrential downpours and 90+ degree weather.)
