How do you get the leaves smaller?

Hello,

I'm fairly new to the art of bonsai and need some advice.

The leaves on my port jackson ficus are big. How do i get them smaller to be in proportion to the tree? If there a special way to leaf prune? and when should it be done?

The tree is approx 30 cm.

Thank you in advance!

Pruning and confining the roots results in smaller leaves. When the leaves on an established bonsai grow large it usually means lack of light. The tree has to produce larger leaves in order to use the available light for photosynthesis.

Leaf pruning can be done. I use it only to eliminate the few larger leaves that appear, a few at a time so there is always sufficient leaves left. Total defoliation is often done prior to an exhibit or show, timed so that the tree is full of small leaves on the day the show starts.

It would be helpful if you described the setting for your tree as to how much light it's getting.

Remember too that this is a tool usually used when the tree is near final design. If for no other reasons that leaf pruning will stall growth, and is stressfull to the tree.

As has been asked where in the world are you?
To answer your question it helps to know. Here in Western Australia I will start defoliating my figs in about two weeks.
The reason for this is to increase ramification and to reduce the leaf size. Take the whole leaf off leaving the stem.
If i need a branch or part of the tree to lengthen, or thicken up I do not touch that part.
I do not do it till the night time temperatures stay above 15% celsius ( approx 40 farenheit ). I hope this helps .

I'm in Victoria, Australia.

Currently the bonsai gets morning sun but is in the shade in the afternoon. Should I move it so it's in full sun all day?

Will this stop the leaves growing so big? or does it still need some pruning? The tree hasn't been repotted for 3 years.

Moving into the sun will help to reduce the leaves size,it will however run the risk of them getting burnt.
Because contrary to what some people say the sun does shine in Vctoria. It does need pruning.
Melbourne has quite a few clubs I would suggest if you are of course in or near ,that you join one or at least seek help from someone. If you can post a picture I might be able to help . Some of us in the west are nice people!!. Yours in Bonsai Pup.
