Hollow Trunk

When developing a hollow trunk, is it important to ensure that no part of the hollow is in contact with the soil ? By this I mean that can it be a potential problem if the hollowed out area is in constant contact with a moist area ?

I don't think that's necessary a problem as long as you have good drainage in the hollow and good draining soil. I do recommend treating the hollow by carving out all rotting soft wood and applying lime sulfur thoroughly. I also apply wood hardener after the lime sulfur. Finally, any roots under the hollow should be cleaned out to keep moisture from accunulating.

Thanks Jorge

I presume the hardener does not affect any of the living tissue of the tree ?

Frank:

It should not. Here in the US it is distributed by Minwax. You would have to check the manufacturer in the UK. I actually apply two coats of wood hardener. It might need some refreshing every 6 months or so.

Good luck with your hollow trunk!
