Winters are generally mild compared to the US & Europe. Winter in Melbourne rarely goes below 0 c (32 F) at night and normally around 8 - 15 c (46 - 59 F) during the day. We may get a frost or two in mid winter and it rarely snows except in the mountians. Winter days are general a mixture of rain or sun or overcast. Sometimes all three on the same day. There is a saying in Oz regarding Melbourne's weather - you are likely to get all four seasons in one day

My main concern was the type of winter protection this tree should have. Your winters sound very much like those in Norther California where we did not worry much about winter protection except that the trees did not get too wet or blown over by high winds.

Yep that's about all I do as well. Unless there are any special needs of the species of cause. But in general, there is no need for any additional winter protection in our climate.

Frankston here...and my hubby also has one of these. We're going to put ours into the ground for a few years first to thicken the trunk, then we'll have a look at it. I've got a False Cypress that's 8 or so years old in ground, that we'd like to do up, but I'm afraid this time of year might be too much.

We've got the added "burden" of having extremely sandy soil...which is great for our Cacti, but I'm not so sure about Bonsai.
How have you guys coped with your Bonsai and good ol' Aussie winters in the past?
