@Cre8tive & susieq:
The site has been meeting bandwith limitations, not space limitations. Pictures in old threads don't contribute to bandwith consumption, unless some member visits that old post, which is an invaluable asset IMHO. So, there shouldn't be any problem there. @Cre8tive: You could visit the same post a thousand times, but your browser fetches the images just once. After that, it remains in the browser's local cache, unless the poster updates the picture, thus invalidating it and forcing your browser to reload. (Your browser just checks file dates/times to see if it needs reloading) So, there's no problem here either. ![]() Last edited by duartix : 27-May-2004 at 07:58 AM. |

I appreciate the tutorial on images, duartix. Feel free to use any avatar or photo examples you would like.
Another point for reducing image size is that smaller, more efficient images will load more quickly. Regards, Matt

Thanks Treebay, but your avatar just gave me around 50% acceptable reductions. The example I used was a lot more effective.
You know, the tool alows batch conversion, so you could feed it all the avatars on the site. The disadvantage is you have to use the same setting for all images. I've tried a few GIF avatars with a reduction to 64 and 32 colours and it went about in half. Improoving JPEG avatars should be done in a personalized way, image by image. I guess it's up to each member to do this. |

Whenever I upload photos, I save them at 75 dpi - most monitors can only reproduce 72 dpi I think, this saves a temendous amount of space by reducing the file size.
Does having my photos on my webserver save bonsaitalk's bandwidth? Robbie |

@RWillieK:
I thought DPI only made sense for printers. ![]() For monitor display what makes sense is pixels, so in that way the maximum size is already defined. What's important here is filesize, whether it's a 200x200 pixel image or 450x450, it's makes little diference. Saving images on your server and publishing links in the thread, even though it saves bandwidth, has been disencouraged. This happens sooner than later: some of those images will get deleted, leaving the threads relevance hanging on pictures that cease to exist on their original servers. Publishing these pictures on the forum, guaranties that they'll be all in one place, allowing better management. Last edited by duartix : 27-May-2004 at 02:07 PM. |

If you are using Photoshop or another image editing program that has a "save for the web" option, there is really no need to go past 30% on a jpeg. And save for the web is the best way to get those file sizes down.

why not just have the pictures hosted at another FREE site...
i have no pictures of Bonsai trees but here is a picture of my car, that is hosted on another site that shouldn't be taking any of the bandwith of this site... Last edited by Turbo328is : 7-Jan-2008 at 04:28 PM. |

There are two reasons, Turbo. The first is, it takes forever for those of us on dial up to load a page like that.
The second is, websites go down and they go away. Things are still changing in the "interwebs" but even the commercial photo sharing sites could end up disappearing and breaking the link so the photo will never be seen again. |
