I have a question in regards to fertilizer. Practically every plant you buy from a nursery or retail outlet such as Lowes or Wal-Mart or if you look at the soil......it has little green beads of fertilizer. Does anyone know the brand name of these "green beads"..? It must be good stuff because all the plant suppliers use it. I would love to know what it is and a source to get it. Any help is appreciated.

Do a search on Multicote or Nutricote. Might also try Osmocote if the others are un-obtainable. Vic

Not necessarily good for bonsai though, the release mechanism works with heat, so depending on temps, you could have the whole shebang dumped into the pot, I suggest that you use a fert, with given NPK ratios and know what your tree is getting.

Adding to Mcspeed, depending on the bonsai it may need more/less acidic soil and so the proper fertilizer needs to be selected. For my acid-lovers, I like using Miracid. You can find this pretty much anywhere. But yes, check what ratio of NPK your plant needs. If you want to get really specific, bonsai need different levels of NPK @ different seasons. I have a book that explains this well. It's either called "Bonsai School" or "Bonsai Workshop," I'm not sure which one...

I've read elsewhere that an even N-P-K analogy will suffice (at least, in my case for lime-hating bonsai). So, I'm thinking, if MiracleGro for Azaleas is/could be (I haven't found out yet) is 10-10-10, then it should be fine to feed.

Miracle gro for azaleas is 16-6-13.3 (8.5% Amoniacal N and 7.5% Uric N). Standard Miracle gro is 24-8-16 (3.5% Amoniacal N and 20.5% Uric N).

The Miracid product is from the company that makes Miracle gro. It's also called Miracle Gro azalea food. Check out this link. If you have an acid lover, this works great. The ratio is 30-10-10
http://images.google.com/imgres?img...l%3Den%26sa%3DN To get rid of lime in tap water simply let it sit for 24 hours and it will settle @ the bottom. Or, more effective, boil the water and let it cool to room temp. |
