Coastal Oak Transplants
I have collected several Coastal Oaks and find that they are developing brown spots on the leafs. I checked the ones in the wild and find that they too develop brown spots on the leaf. Is this too much, or too little water? San Jose, CA

Hi cjones,
When I lived in Palo Alto, I used to grow coastal live oaks. They had this problem as well, but it never seemed to affect the health of the tree. Best regards, Carl

cjones, Id be real surprized if your brown spots have anything to do with your watering. I remember the same thing on leaves on Coastal Live Oaks in your area when I lived near it. I don't know whether it was some sort of gall insect or fungus but I remember it occurring on otherwise perfectly healthy trees. If it were me, I'd ignore it. My guess is that in 2 or 3 years, you won't think twice about it.
