I am a newbie to bonsai and have acquired a Chinese Juniper and a Chinese Elm as my first trees from a colleague at work. I am looking to get some more trees, but I am concerned because my garden is very windy, there are no truly sheltered spots.
I can provide areas that are in full sun and areas that are in shade but all suffer from the wind. Are there any species that are particularly hardy to windy conditions? Rich |

As a general rule, deciduous trees, such as Japanese maples, are more likely to suffer wind burn to their foliage in an exposed, windy position. Conifers such as pines and junipers, on the other hand, are more likely to not be affected by the same windy conditions.

Can you build a small wall out of bricks or treated lumber? It doesn't take much for a wind break. Good Luck

Pick the trees that live and thrive in Yorkshire of course...sounds simple doesn't it?
I'm originally from Yorkshire and started bonsai growing there - I found no problems with Common Elm, Beech, Larch, Scots Pine and Cotoneaster. Plus Common Juniper, Rowan, Hawthorn are ALL fine and can take a plenty of abuse. Make sure you keep them well ties into the pots and watch out they will dry MUCH faster than in sheltered spot. If you fancy maples, Field Maple can take wind - it's much less delicate than its Japanese cousins.
