air layering crepe myrtles
I just moved into a house that has a crepe myrtle in the front yard. I decided to airlayer one of the branches to make a future bonsai. I read in a book the tecnique for air layering but it dosen't say how long it takes. does anyone know how long it takes for sufficient roots to develope for most trees. more importantly a crepe myrtle. thanks to any one with any info, Clint

Several years ago, I air layered a crape myrtle that grows in my yard. I performed the air layer in late spring, and separated the tree in early fall. The branch was 1-2 inches in diameter. I used the ring bark method, applied Rootone, wrapped in moist sphagnum and wrapped the whole thing in plastic. I also placed a cut plastic pot around the section for added support.
Good luck!
