Several years ago, I air layered a crape myrtle that grows in my yard. I performed the air layer in late spring, and separated the tree in early fall. The branch was 1-2 inches in diameter. I used the ring bark method, applied Rootone, wrapped in moist sphagnum and wrapped the whole thing in plastic. I also placed a cut plastic pot around the section for added support.

Good luck!
