Zone Specific forums?

I am constantly looking for info specifically to my zone.

What do you think about having forums broken down into zone areas?

for example
1-3
4-6
7-9
10-12
etc..

or something like that.
I think it would prove to be a great spot to post zone specific questions without having to scour the past messages.

Just a thought.

Unfortunately the zone system has very limited use. It's useful for info about plant selection and overwintering, but thats about it. Nothing about the length of the growing season, humidity, altitude, typical or maximum summer temperatures or anything else enters into it, other than the average minimum temperature, so trying to extrapolate it to general growing conditions doesn't work very well.

So if there were such forums, you might say, live in Seattle, WA and be talking to somebody in Lobbock, Texas, and have very little in common other than how much antifreeze you need in your radiator one day in January.

If you add in the effect of microclimates and so forth, it can change things quite a bit. My parents, who live about a mile from here can leave their ficus outside during the winter, but mind would freeze solid.

So consider the growing zones useful for what they are.

Regards,

Matt.

P.S. There's more on overwintering under bonsaiTALK LINKS under techniques->overwintering.
